Flowers

  • Shapes: single, semi-double, double, rose-like, anemone or peony form
  • Size: usually 5–12 cm in diameter
  • Colors: white, pale pink, bright pink, red, or bicolor
  • Petals: thick, satin-like, slightly waxy

Blooming period

  • Camellia japonica: late winter to spring (Feb–Apr)
  • Camellia sasanqua: autumn to early winter (Oct–Dec)
  • Camellia reticulata: mid to late spring

Foliage & plant

  • Evergreen, glossy dark green leaves
  • Strong contrast between flowers and foliage

Fragrance

  • Mostly little or no scent (some C. sasanqua are lightly fragrant)

Growing conditions

  • Prefers partial shade
  • Acidic, moist, well-drained soil
  • Tolerates mild cold, but flowers can be damaged by hard frost
